May 21, 2009 - U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-01) today introduced legislation bestowing a collective Congressional Gold Medal to the soldiers involved in the World War II battles of Bataan, Corregidor and Luzon. New Mexico families, per capita, were directly affected by the Bataan Death March of 1942 more than any other state. Nearly 2,000 New Mexican soldiers were captured as Prisoners of War and were forced to endure a tortuous 65-mile, five-day march in tropical heat, without food or water, followed by three years of brutal imprisonment.
