SENATOR TOM UDALL ENCOURAGES VETERANS AND FAMILY MEMBERS TO APPLY FOR EDUCATION BENEFITS
WASHINGTON –In a series of local town hall meetings, U.S. Senator Tom Udall unveiled a new GI Bill Resource and Application Guide to encourage Post-9/11 veterans and their family members to apply for benefits. The Department of Veterans Affairs will begin distributing these benefits to post-9/11 veterans and family members who qualify on Aug. 1. Udall, whose father and uncle both benefited from the original Montgomery GI Bill, fought to enact the new education benefits.

“I will never forget the debt owed to those who have fought to keep America safe and as Americans, we all have a sacred responsibility to support the brave men and women that serve our country in uniform,” said Udall. “I hope that by making this guide available for New Mexico’s veterans and their family members it will increase access to these important federal benefits.”
Anyone who served for at least 90 days after September 10, 2001 or was discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days is eligible for benefits under the new law. The legislation provides a full four year college education to those who served at least three years after September 10, 2001. Those serving less than three years are eligible for a percentage of the maximum benefits based on a sliding scale of time served. In addition, stipends are available for housing and books.
“After World War II we took a step towards fulfilling our responsibility to veterans who served by institution the Montgomery GI bill which gave thousands of veterans, including my father and uncle, the chance to pursue higher education. I’m proud to have helped pass a new, Post-9/11 GI Bill as another step toward fulfilling that sacred responsibility for a new generation of veterans,” concluded Udall.
